Aloe vera pulp, gel or juice: what is the difference?

In shops and online you see "aloe vera pulp", "aloe drinking gel" or "aloe vera juice". These words do not always mean the same thing. Here is how to tell them apart, and what exactly is inside a Forever bottle.

What is inside an aloe vera leaf

An aloe vera leaf has three parts:

  • The rind, thick and green, which protects the leaf.
  • The latex, a bitter yellow sap just under the rind.
  • The gel, or mucilage, translucent, at the heart of the leaf. This is also what is called the pulp.

For a drink, what matters is which part of the leaf was used, and in what proportion.

Pulp, gel, juice: three words, three uses

The wordWhat it usually meansAt Forever
Aloe vera pulpThe inner gel of the leafThe catalogue's word: "the aloe vera pulp is concentrated at 99.7%" in Forever Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe vera drinking gelA drink made from that gelThe name of Forever's drinks: the gel is stabilised and stays fluid, so it pours like a juice
Aloe vera juiceA very broad sales term: gel diluted in water, sometimes sweetened, or crushed whole leafForever mostly speaks of pulp and gel; "aloe vera juice" is the everyday word many customers use

In other words, "Forever aloe pulp" and "Forever aloe vera drinking gel" are the same product. The word "juice" says nothing about which part of the leaf was used: you have to read the label.

How Forever makes its aloe vera pulp

According to the brand's official documentation, the leaves are harvested by hand when fully mature, then filleted: the rind is removed to keep only the gel from the heart of the pulp. Within six hours of harvest, this gel, with no added preservatives, is stabilised. The gel in the PET bottles is still stabilised the same way, using an aseptic process.

Forever uses Aloe barbadensis Miller, grown in its own fields, notably in the Dominican Republic. To learn more about the plantations and the harvest, read Forever aloe vera, from plant to product.

Aloe, aloès, aloe vera: the same plant?

Yes. "Aloès" is the traditional French name, "aloé" a common spelling, and Aloe vera the botanical name. Aloe barbadensis Miller is a synonym recognised by the taxonomic reference of the French National Museum of Natural History. The genus Aloe, however, has several hundred species: a product labelled "aloe" does not always say which one.

Reading a label in 4 questions

  1. What percentage of aloe vera? It should appear in the ingredients list. At Forever: 99.7% for Aloe Vera Gel, 90.7% for Aloe Berry Nectar, 86% for Aloe Mango, 84.5% for Aloe Peaches.
  2. Which part of the leaf? Inner gel, pulp, or whole leaf.
  3. What is added? Water, sugars, flavourings, fruit juice, vitamin C.
  4. Is it meant to be drunk? A drink is labelled "food supplement" and has directions for use. A skin gel is a cosmetic: it is not for drinking.

The IASC (International Aloe Science Council) label checks aloe vera content and quality: see our Forever labels and certifications.

Frequently asked questions

Are aloe vera pulp and aloe vera drinking gel the same thing?

At Forever, yes: the drink is made from the pulp, the inner gel of the leaf. The catalogue describes the pulp in Forever Aloe Vera Gel as concentrated at 99.7%.

Why call it a "gel" when the drink is liquid?

Because the drink is made from the gel of the leaf. Once stabilised, this gel stays fluid and pours like a juice.

Can I drink Aloe Vera Gelly?

No. Aloe Vera Gelly is a cosmetic skincare product. To drink aloe vera, choose a drink such as Forever Aloe Vera Gel.

Can I make my own aloe vera pulp from a leaf?

It is tricky: you must remove all the rind and the yellow latex, then use the gel straight away. Forever's drinks are filleted and stabilised within six hours of harvest.
