The new term has started, the days are getting shorter, and that resolution to “get back into exercise” is still waiting. You are not alone: returning to physical activity after a long break is mostly about organisation and patience.
In this article, I share my tips for getting back into exercise gently: where to start, how to fit activity into a busy week, how to stay motivated, and how to hydrate and prepare around your workouts.
Before you lace up your trainers, take five minutes to take stock:
If you haven't exercised for a long time, are taking medication, are pregnant or have any doubts, ask your doctor or a healthcare professional before starting again. It is also a chance to choose an activity that suits your situation.
The most common mistake is trying to make up for lost time in the very first week. You overdo it, you are exhausted, and you give up. The key is to build up gradually:
Your body needs time to adapt. It is better to finish a session wanting to come back than wanting to quit.
“I don't have time” is the excuse we hear most, and it is often true. So be clever about it:
A sample starter week: a 30-minute brisk walk on Tuesday, 20 minutes of gentle strength work at home on Thursday, a bike ride or swim at the weekend.
The motivation of the first few days always fades eventually. What takes over is habit. A few ideas to keep going:
Above all, choose an activity you enjoy. It is the only one you will stick with.
You don't need to be an athlete to enjoy regular physical activity. Moving a little every day helps you feel fitter, sleep better, unwind after a busy day and keep enjoying getting around easily.
A commonly quoted guideline for adults is around 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity at least five days a week, counting everything that gets you moving: walking, cycling, stairs, gardening. It is not a goal to reach in the first week, but a direction to work towards at your own pace.
And remember to limit the time you spend sitting: standing up, walking for a few minutes and stretching all count as moving.
It is often forgotten, but hydration is part of the session. Drink a glass of water before you start, take a bottle or a shaker filled with water, and sip during and after exercise.
On the food side, avoid exercising straight after a big meal. If your last meal was several hours ago, a small snack an hour before can help. After your session, a meal or snack with some protein (yoghurt, eggs, pulses, a protein shake) fits in naturally.
Finally, give yourself some time: a shower, a few stretches, a gentle leg massage with a cooling lotion. And get enough sleep: rest is part of training.
Food supplements should not replace a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
Two sessions of 20 to 30 minutes a week is a good start. Then increase gradually, every two or three weeks.
One you enjoy and where you can control the effort: brisk walking, cycling, swimming, gentle strength work, yoga. If in doubt, ask your doctor.
Block fixed slots in your diary, pack your bag the night before and use everyday journeys to move more.
Here is what I carry in my gym bag. Food supplements should not replace a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
New look! An energy drink with vitamins B3, B5, B6 and B12. Pack of 12 cans.
Why : A well-chilled can before some sessions, for the pleasure of a sparkling tropical fruit drink, never more than one can a day. It contains vitamins B3, B6 and B12, which contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism; it is no substitute for a balanced meal or a good night's sleep. Contains caffeine (roughly the equivalent of an espresso per can): not recommended for children, pregnant or breastfeeding women or people sensitive to caffeine; do not mix with alcohol.
A vegan vanilla shake made with pea and pumpkin protein, for a light, protein-rich snack.
Why : After my session, one level scoop in 240 ml of water or the drink of your choice, shaken well. A vegan vanilla shake, dairy-free and soy-free, with 17 g of protein per serving. Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass, to the maintenance of muscle mass and to the maintenance of normal bones. Not recommended for children under 12 or for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Why : The Forever shaker, to mix my shake without lumps or simply carry water to sip during the session.
An aloe vera lotion with an instant cooling effect, popular after sport or a long day on your feet.
Why : After exercise, I apply it to my legs and massage it in: a non-greasy gel-cream with 42.9% aloe vera gel, menthol, camphor and eucalyptus, for a feeling of freshness and an invigorating massage. Adults only, never on the face or intimate areas, not for use during pregnancy; patch test on the inside of your elbow before first use.
