Marine collagen: how to read the label

Powder, capsules or drinkable sachets: marine collagen supplements are not easy to compare. Here is what to look at on the label, using Forever Marine Collagen, nominated for the 2026 Top Santé Award, as an example.

What the label is allowed to say

In Europe, collagen itself has no authorised health claim. The added vitamins and minerals carry them. The Forever Marine Collagen label reads:

Beauty starts from within with Forever Marine Collagen™, an innovative blend of 3 g of high-quality marine collagen combining traditionally used plants and essential vitamins including vitamin A, plus zinc and biotin to help maintain the beauty of skin, hair and nails.

Forever Marine Collagen™ also contains vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, bones and blood vessels.

Keep this habit for every brand: check which ingredient each sentence on the label refers to.

Reading the nutrition table

Values are given for the daily dose: here, 1 sachet of 15 ml. The NRV column shows the percentage of nutrient reference values.

Powder, capsules or sachets: the format

Collagen is dosed in grams. In capsules, you often need several to reach a few grams; powder is mixed into a drink; a liquid sachet is ready to drink. Forever Marine Collagen uses sachets: 3 g of fish collagen hydrolysate a day, with a tangy fruity taste, easy to carry.

Also check sweeteners and sugars: this sachet contains sweeteners (erythritol, steviol glycosides) and fruit juice concentrates.

Where the collagen comes from

"Marine" does not say which animal the collagen comes from. According to Forever, the collagen in Marine Collagen comes from wild-caught fish (cod, pollock, haddock), with no collagen from shellfish, shark or molluscs. In practice: fish is an allergen shown in bold on the label, and the product is not suitable for vegetarians.

How to take Forever Marine Collagen

The label says: drink one sachet a day, and do not take it on an empty stomach. A box of 30 sachets therefore lasts a month. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

Read the label's precautions before buying: the product must not be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding women or by under-18s; it is not recommended for women trying to conceive or for smokers; it must not be taken on the same day as other products containing green tea.

Food supplements should be used as part of a healthy lifestyle and are not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet. For your health, be physically active on a regular basis. www.mangerbouger.fr
